Cambodia boasts a large and licensed casino industry. In a recent commentary to GGRASIA, Roth Pirun, secretary general of Cambodia's Commercial Gambling Commission, said a total of 87 out of 171 casino license applications had obtained renewal results as of October 10. So far, one of 171 applications has been rejected, he added.

In mid-September, the Cambodian government ordered a "strict crackdown" on all types of illegal gambling. National measures include lottery tickets, chicken fights and poker among other forms of unauthorized gambling.

The national authorities have created a group to oversee the implementation of the measure, led by the Minister of the Interior.

The Cambodian government's move follows news of the prevalence of illegal gambling in Cambodia. The country is also in the spotlight recently with a number of reports that people from other Asian countries have been trafficked to Cambodia and forced to work in criminal organizations, or businesses related to illegal gambling.
